If you’ve ever walked the Camino de Santiago, you might have heard the word “Ultréia”. More than just a greeting or a casual phrase, Ultréia carries a deeper meaning, steeped in the rich tradition of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
Origin and Meaning
Derived from Latin, Ultréia means "onward" or "go further." Historically, pilgrims used this word to encourage one another, especially in moments of physical or emotional difficulty on the road. It was a reminder to keep moving forward, no matter how challenging the journey might become.
This simple but powerful word has come to symbolize the inner strength, perseverance, and resilience needed to complete the pilgrimage. Whether it’s the weight of a heavy backpack, sore feet, or the emotional strain of long days, Ultréia serves as a motivational call to press on and trust in the path ahead.
Ultréia in Modern Pilgrimage Today, Ultréia is still spoken by pilgrims walking the Camino. It is often combined with "e suseia," meaning "and upward." Together, the phrase “Ultréia e suseia” can be translated as "onward and upward," encapsulating the idea of continuous progress, both physically and spiritually.
Many pilgrims find that Ultréia is not only a word of encouragement but also a philosophy. It reflects the journey’s deeper lessons of self-discovery, resilience, and connection with others. The Camino is more than a physical path; it’s a spiritual and emotional journey where pilgrims constantly push their limits and find renewed purpose.
A Word to Carry with You Whether you’re walking the Camino de Santiago or simply navigating life’s challenges, Ultréia can be a mantra for moving forward. It’s a call to trust the process, embrace the journey, and know that, with each step, you’re going further—not just in distance, but in personal growth.
You keep going ultréia even beyond Santiago in fact, as "real pilgrim", untill they reach the sea at Fisterra, which means "the end and the earth" ! Here is a picture of our group of pilgrims at Fisterra Sunset (july 2019) ! Then Ultréia is to live in your own daily life : how could you go a little further everyday !
As pilgrims say to each other, “Buen Camino y Ultréia”—"Have a good journey and go further."
